Camaieu clothing chain, specialising in women’s clothing, is leaving the Polish market. The company’s website has already stopped accepting orders and the stationary stores are to be closed at the end of June.

Camaieu is looking for an investor

As far back as 2018. Camaieu operated about 40 stationary stores in Poland. However, the chain has recorded negative sales dynamics in recent years, and the number of stores has been gradually decreasing. Currently, it amounts to 25. In total, the chain operates about 1 ,000 stores in 18 countries, more than half of which are located in France.

The COVID-19 pandemic and the closure of shops in shopping malls have worsened the company’s situation, but it has already been struggling with financial problems. According to Business Insider, the company planned to implement a restructuring plan from the spring, which was to include the closure of 125 stores in France and French-speaking countries. Now it has been placed under receivership in France and is looking for an investor.

How will the COVID-19 affect companies’ development plans?

Camaieu is not the only clothing chain that has decided to leave Poland in recent years. In September the decision to withdraw was announced by the Norwegian brand Cubus. We wrote more about it here. Similar movements were also decided by such companies as Aldo (footwear), Celio (men’s clothing), Centro (Russian footwear brand), Mothercare (clothes and accessories for babies and children) or the cult American brand GAP. These decisions were most frequently motivated by poor sales results in Poland or a deterioration of the company’s overall financial standing, a change in the global brand strategy or – in the case of several brands – withdrawal from distribution by Empik Media & Fashion.

At present, it is difficult to say how the coronavirus pandemic will affect the development plans of other companies. Primark informed about the launch of its first store in Poland at the beginning of the year. The chain was to open an outlet in Warsaw in spring 2020 and enter Poznan in 2021. Currently, these plans may be postponed.
