Polish Enterprise Fund VIII, a private equity fund managed by Enterprise Investors (EI), will acquire an 80% stake in Snap Outdoor – a distributor of mountaineering and climbing equipment and the owner of 8a.pl, a major e-commerce platform dedicated to active tourism and mountain sports. The value of the transaction, which is subject to antitrust clearance, is not disclosed. The founders, Piotr and Elzbieta Czmoch, will remain minority shareholders.

Snap Outdoor, founded and headquartered in 2001 in Gliwice, operates in a developing market niche, fuelled by healthy lifestyle trends, the increasing popularity of outdoor sports and rising disposable income of the population. The 8a.pl, owned by the company, is a major e-commerce platform dedicated to active tourism and mountain sports, but also runs two brick and mortar stores in Warsaw and Gliwice, while the third unit will open shortly in Katowice.

Enterprise Investors expect the outdoor sector to continue its dynamic growth in the coming years. The strong Snap Outdoor’s financial results confirm this trend – the company revenues topped €16m in 2020, while this year they are expected to exceed €23m.

In the press statement, Michal Kedzia, partner at EI, said the fund was convinced that Snap Outdoor’s business model could be successfully replicated in other CEE markets, which in most cases are not marked by the presence of a clear market leader in outdoor e-commerce. He went on to say that thanks to the company’s broad experience in specialty retail and excellent logistics, Snap Outdoor could become a consolidation platform for other niche e-commerce segments.
