The internet channel is one of the few that can be positively affected by the coronavirus epidemic. At present, the situation forces rapid adaptation and changes in operations. More players on the grocery market invest in online shops.

Change in trend in online grocery market?

According to PMR’s data, in recent years the online grocery sales channel has been growing relatively slowly due to the problems of the largest players with e-shops: Alma, Piotr i Pawel and Tesco chains. At the beginning of 2020, one of the largest pure e-grocery players – bdsklep.pl – also withdrew from the market.

Interestingly, the internet channel is one of the few that can be positively affected by the coronavirus epidemic. Since the beginning of March there is information that online food stores are experiencing a significant increase in orders.

New online grocery stores open

On 6 April, Stokrotka grocery store chain launched its pilot online shop. It is available for residents of Lublin and its surroundings, but the service is to be extended to other cities. Customers can pick up their purchases in one of the Stokrotka shops in Lublin (at Spoldzielczosci Pracy Street).

Kaufland launched an interesting service in early April. Customers through the Mango online store have the opportunity to order a package with the most needed food and hygiene products. It contains 32 products, including pasta, rice, oil and toilet paper. The package costs 115.98 PLN, and the parcel costs 19.90 PLN.

The Zabka chain of shops has also launched an online food store. Purchases can be collected in selected stores in Warsaw (currently in three stores, but the pilot program is to be extended to 20 outlets), while the home delivery option is available in Poznan (the delivery area includes the centre of Poznan). Customers from Warsaw can place their orders via the Zappka application, while in Poznan they can order via the website or by phone.

Long-term benefits?

According to the PMR analysis carried out for the report, Impact of coronavirus epidemic on grocery market in Poland 2020. Scenarios and growth forecasts, the Internet channel is one of the few channels that can benefit from the coronavirus epidemic. What is more, the increase in popularity of online grocery shopping may continue even after the end of the current crisis and motivate more players to launch e-shops.
