On 29 April, Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki and Health Minister Lukasz Szumowski announced at a press conference the next, second stage of easing the restrictions introduced in connection with COVID-19 in Poland. On 4 May shopping malls and hotels will be opened.

The long-awaited opening of shopping malls

In the first phase of lifting the restrictions related to COVID-19, on 20 April 2020, the rules introduced in trade and services were relaxed – more people were allowed to shop in stores at once. In addition, forests and parks were opened.

In the next, second stage, further trade restrictions will be lifted. From 4 May 2020, shopping malls and large-format stores will be able to resume their operations.

However, in commercial facilities with a sales area exceeding 2,000 m2 , a limit of 1 person per 15 m2 of commercial area will be introduced. Moreover, fitness clubs, playgrounds and other recreational spaces and restaurants (food courts) will not be open in shopping centres.

From 4 May, DIY stores will also be able to open at weekends.

Hotels start up again

The ban on accepting guests in hotels will also be lifted, but hotel services will nevertheless have to be provided with special safety rules. Hotel restaurants will be limited and hotel gyms and swimming pools will be closed.

In addition, libraries, archives, museums and other cultural institutions will resume their activities (a specific date of opening will be decided by the operating body after consultation with the sanitary and epidemiological station).

From 4 May, it will also be possible to use the services of medical rehabilitation. From 6 May, nurseries and kindergartens may also be opened.

The basic safety rules have been maintained, such as the obligation to keep a 2-metre distance from other people in public places, an order to cover one’s nose and mouth in a public space, or quarantine and isolation of people infected and suspected of being infected.
